Royal Oak Football Club Director of Coaching : Stephen Gorton

Stephen is the Associate Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Oakland University, a Division 1 soccer powerhouse, and has coached at Oakland since the 2011 season.  Since Stephen’s arrival to Oakland they have won three conference championships and back to back Horizon League Tournament Championships awarding them two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2014, 2015) and was named Top 10 Division 1 Assistant Coaches in the Country by  Prior to joining Oakland University, he spent four seasons as the Head Coach at Garden City Community College (Kan.).  While at Garden City, his teams where ranked nationally in the Top 10 for three straight years and as high as No. 3.  Stephen has been named NJCAA Plains District Coach of the Year and nominated for the National Coach of the Year award.  During his college coaching career, Stephen has coached 7 All Americans, 33 All-Conference players and 30 All-Region players.  While coaching for Oakland, Stephen has also been a coach for Vardar Academy for the past two years.   In taking the position, Stephen stated that “I’m excited for the opportunity to help grow the Royal Oak soccer brand.  We are going to make steps in our development structure to be an attractive option for all prospective youth players in Oakland County”.

“We interviewed a number of exceptional candidates, but Steve blew us away with his strategic thinking, energy, and ideas to maximize the development of our players and coaches so that each can reach their highest potential,” said Chris Maeso, the President of the Royal Oak Youth Soccer Association.  Glenn Wicka, the Club’s Vice President and former chair of its Premier Committee, added that “Stephen is the perfect person to lead the Renegades as we continue our rapid ascension into one of the top travel soccer clubs in the area and expand Royal Oak’s huge recreational program that is already one of the largest in the State.”

Stephen resides in Royal Oak with his wife Andrea, daughter Sparrow, and dog Cue.
